Pulse oximeter probe & components: A pulse oximeter probe consists of a light emitter and a photodetector, encased in either a plastic probe (non-disposable) or an adhesive-type probe (disposable) – see Figure 1 for an example.  Typical pulse oximeter probes will read saturations between 70-100% to an accuracy of  plus or minus 2-4%, depending on manufacturer.  When saturations drop below 70%, the actual percentage displayed is no longer considered accurate.  NOTE:  Critical care areas have special probes designed for patients with cyanosis or poor perfusion (see Appendix B for details).
